Work of physiotherapists and other AHPs celebrated at CAHPO awards and AHPs Day 2024

A team comprised of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and support workers from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been named as England’s public health team of the year.

The specialist falls team, which operates from two sites at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust, picked up the prestigious Public Health Award at the CAPHO awards ceremony in London last week (10 October), which was hosted by Suzanne Rastrick, Chief Officer for the Allied Health Professions. The event was also available to watch online.

The Public Health Award – one of eight categories appearing in this year’s version of the annual event – was awarded by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. Its merits were assessed by a judging panel, which also assessed nominations for the other categories.

The team, which was originally set up in 2019, has developed pathways, resources and training that help to make ‘falls everybody’s business’. Members are particularly proud of a digital resource called ‘Steady on your Feet’, a self-assessment tool that forms a key part of the falls pathway. Their remit is to ensure that every older person in the catchment areas has access to a falls assessment.

One team covers Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, while the other covers Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Workforce Transformation Award

An AHP preceptorship team based at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, which covers various parts of London and south east England, working with a colleague from Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT), won the AHP Workforce Transformation Award.

This was sponsored by NHS England’s Workforce, Training and Development Directorate.

SO incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve and SO incredibly grateful to Oxleas for believing in our vision and Wendy at MPFT for trusting us with a brand new concept! The power of a successful partnership [Oxleas]

Two Oxleas-based AHPs, physiotherapist Hannah Tomkins and podiatrist Felicity Devereux, were said to be ‘over the moon’ in a posting on the Oxleas team’s site on LinkedIn. Wendy Hollins, who is based at MPFT, completes the winning trio.

‘Our partnership was an innovative collaboration, and since then, MPFT has renewed their commitment by purchasing places on the programme in bulk, including the Beyond Preceptorship package,’ the LinkedIn post said.

‘We have been able to demonstrate workforce stability for their preceptee and preceptors since launching in 2021,’ it added.

The post included a quote from an MPFT preceptee, who said: ‘Being able to communicate with other professionals early in their careers has helped to give me perspective on shared experience, I have really enjoyed that sense of belonging and community within the meeting.’

Felicity posted on X: ‘SO incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve and SO incredibly grateful to Oxleas for believing in our vision and Wendy at MPFT for trusting us with a brand new concept! The power of a successful partnership.’

Creative Provision of Placements

Meanwhile, a team of lecturers and senior lecturers who deliver practice placements for student AHPs at Keele University picked up the AHP Creative Provision of Placements Award. It was awarded by the Council of Deans of Health. They have developed a wide range of novel practice placements, rather than relying on traditional placement sources.

AHPs Day 2024: 'people first'

Suzanne Rastrick gave an online address this morning (14 October) to launch AHPs Day 2024. Quality and safety is the key theme for this year's event.

This aligns with the AHP strategy for England (2022-2027): AHPs Deliver, which 'emphasises the importance of providing exceptional care to the people and communities we work alongside', AHPs heard.

Information available on NHS England's website added: 'By delivering care that is not only safe and of high quality, but also grounded in research evidence and innovation, we can make a real difference. This approach helps us address health and care inequalities and is in perfect harmony with the aspirations of the "people first" and "optimising care" areas of focus within our AHP strategy.'
