Physiotherapy is a key part of rehab services for people with long-term Covid-19, says Nice

Physiotherapy is likely to play a central part in long Covid rehabilitation teams based in ‘one stop’ clinics and other settings, according to a guideline released on 18 December by the National Institute for Care Excellence (Nice).

‘Healthcare professionals should have a range of specialist skills, with expertise in treating fatigue and respiratory symptoms (including breathlessness),’ the guideline suggests.

Encourage people to exercise at work rather than in their leisure time for greater impact

Public health initiatives should focus on boosting people’s physical activity levels while they are at work, according to an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

A team led by Andreas Holtermann, from the National Research Centre for the Working Environment in Copenhagen, Denmark, calls for a shift away from the traditional approach of encouraging people to be more active in their leisure time.

Physiotherapist Laura Breach revels in new innovations post

Respiratory physiotherapist Laura Breach has joined the East Midlands Academic Health Science Network as a senior innovation lead.

She told PhysioUpdate: ‘It feels daunting to take off the “physio hat”, but the transferable skills physiotherapists possess mean they are so well placed to take on improvement roles such as this.

‘I'm excited to have the opportunity to influence and improve services at a regional level working in partnership with healthcare providers across the East Midlands.’

Earlier this year, Laura stepped down from a five-year stint as public relations officer with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care. In that post, she managed the network’s marketing issues, social media output and the promotion of the specialty. She also played a part in overseeing member-public engagement and also helped to lead the organisation's rebranding in 2016.

A visiting lecturer at De Montfort University in Leicester, Laura was a critical care clinical specialist at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for five years, until becoming a senior innovation lead in the autumn.

She graduated in physiotherapy from Brunel University in west London in 2007, and gained a Masters in advancing respiratory physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University in 2019.
