Public Health England (PHE) has launched a campaign to help adults develop healthier habits during the coming year.
Called Better Health new year, the campaign offers support through tools and apps, such as the updated NHS 12 Week Weight Loss app.
Rather than offering athletes with low back pain (LBP) a list of ‘what’s available’, clinicians should give guidance on evidence-based treatments instead, according to an article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Written by an international team led by former elite rower Jane S Thornton, an assistant professor at the Schulich school of medicine and dentistry at Western University, Ontario, Canada, the article is based on a systematic review with a meta-analysis.
Eve Corner, a lecturer in physiotherapy at Brunel University London and a critical care physiotherapist, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours List.
The award recognised Dr Corner's contribution to health education during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr Corner, who has built an impressive array of research publications over the past decade, led a national training scheme for NHS staff who were re-deployed to intensive care units (ICUs) to care for patients with Covid-related conditions. Many of them lacked recent experience in respiratory and critical care work.
Tight timeframe
Working to a tight timeframe with analytics company 33N, Dr Corner led a Brunel team that developed pre-recorded lectures and interactive tutorials with specialists in critical care. The participants learned how to monitor and interpret ICU equipment and honed their ventilation skills.
Dr Corner and colleagues developed the content and the interactive web systems in five days, before delivering the pilot to nearly 100 candidates. Since then, more than 2,000 clinicians from more than 170 NHS trusts in all parts of the UK and the Republic of Ireland have benefited from the training.
‘All this work was undertaken by Dr Corner in addition to her job as a full-time university lecturer,’ said John Cossar, divisional lead and senior lecturer in physiotherapy.
Dr Corner was the lead author in her most recently listed publication, titled Qualitative, grounded theory exploration of patients’ experience of early mobilisation, rehabilitation and recovery after critical illness. BMJ Open https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/2/e026348
