Physiotherapists and other healthcare staff at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) were praised by their chief executive this week (20 September) after the north west London hospital achieved an impressively high international ranking. The hospital gained ninth place in a global list of 125 top orthopaedic centres for 2023 that was conducted by the US-based magazine Newsweek, and its oncology centre received a special mention.

More than 40,000 medical professionals – doctors, hospital managers and other healthcare practitioners – in more than 20 countries were invited to rate hospitals in an online survey that was conducted over the summer by Newsweek and Statista. The results of the survey were then validated by a global board of renowned medical experts.

The announcement represented a considerable feather in the hospital’s cap, as it was the sole specialist orthopaedic centre in the UK to make the top 50. The RNOH is one of only 22 orthopaedic hospitals to have appeared in the top 25 for the last three years in a row.

Chief executive praises staff

The hospital’s patients have some of the most complex and long-term musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, and staff carry out research and development programmes into future treatments and assistive technologies. RNOH chief executive Paul Fish said he was delighted to see the hospital being recognised as a world-leading centre of excellence for orthopaedics and MSK medicine.

‘The last couple of years have been hugely challenging and we are now undertaking significant work to address the backlog caused by the Covid-19 pandemic while also further improving our services through major investment in new infrastructure.

Professor Fish added: ‘I wish to send my personal thanks and the thanks of the trust board to you for everything you do to make us one of the best hospitals in the world.’

The results of the ranking of the world’s best orthopaedic hospitals follows Newsweek’s ranking of other specialist centres, including cardiology, oncology, endocrinology, neurology and gastroenterology.

How did other UK hospitals fare?

The number one ranking in the orthopaedics category went to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham achieved 50th place, while the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford came one place below. The John Radcliffe Hospital, which is also in Oxford, was ranked in 60th place, while the Royal Devon and Exeter (Wonford) came 112th in the list of 125.

'Smart' hospitals

In Newsweek's list of the 300 ‘best smart hospitals’, St Thomas’s in London achieved the highest ranking of any UK centre. It gained 68th place, with its digital imaging said to be its ‘standout category’.
