Physiotherapists who would like to add a specialist qualification in sports physiotherapy to their CV are being encouraged to apply for a place on a part-time MSc course at a prestigious university sited in one of the UK’s ‘most affordable’ cities.

Cardiff University’s Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy programme was designed in collaboration with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine (ACPSEM), and international organisations such as the International Federation of Sports Physiotherapists.

Prospective students will have an opportunity to develop their knowledge of sports science and injuries – as well as their critical thinking skills – in order to further their careers, the course information suggests. They must apply for a place by the end of July 2023.

The information states: ‘Our established programme is suited to qualified physiotherapists, from across the UK and internationally working in a wide variety of sectors that involve managing people with sport or exercise related injuries. A minimum of two years physiotherapy clinical experience is required, whether this be experience in a high-performance sport level or in a physiotherapy clinic.’

Course requirements

  • at least two years’ physiotherapy clinical experience, whether a high-performance sport setting or a physiotherapy clinic.
  • modules cover a wide range of sport and exercise physiotherapy competencies, including sport and exercise participation, inter-disciplinary management and injury prevention
  • students are given a designated a personal tutor who will support them throughout their studies

 Award-winning lecturers

The course is run experienced researchers and academics with expertise in their field, including physiotherapist Nicola Phillips who has just posted a tweet to publicise the course.

‘Any physios still considering if this is the year to start on a MSc? Our Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy programme @CUHealthSci could be for you! From elite/pro sport to treating in your own clinic – a flexible way to study.’

As reported in PhysioUpdate earlier this month, Professor Phillips received a World Physiotherapy international service award in the management and administration category. Her career has included several spells working with academic, clinical, and professional bodies.

Professor Phillips has supported elite athletes at many Commonwealth and Olympic Games over the last 36 years, including acting as head physiotherapist with the GB and Wales teams and chef de mission for Team Wales. [Twitter: @NicolaPhillPT].
