Physiotherapists and other allied health professionals (AHPs) from UK institutions are being invited to enter a special category of the 2024 Bone Idols awards , which are run by the Yorkshire-based charity Bone Cancer Research Trust.

The trust, which was set up in by a group of families who had lost children and young people to primary bone cancer and first registered in 2006, has announced that there are nine categories in the annual awards.

One of them – titled the Allied Health Professional of the Year Award – will recognise the ‘outstanding contribution' of an AHP, such as a physiotherapist, who has made a ‘tangible difference’ to patients’ lives.

The deadline for submitting nominations is 6 August and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 3 February 2024 at The Queens Hotel in Leeds. Other categories include Team of the Year, Clinician of the Year, Surgeon of the Year and Researcher of the Year.

Ian Lewis Outstanding Contribution Award

Members of the public can vote in all but one of the categories: the Ian Lewis Outstanding Contribution Award, which is the prerogative of a judging panel. ‘This is the most prestigious award of the evening and is to recognise an individual who has dedicated their career to improving outcomes for patients with primary bone cancer,’ the trust stated.

‘This individual may be a healthcare professional or researcher who, through their work, has brought about positive change.’

Professor Lewis, a consultant paediatrician and adolescent oncologist at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, provided vital guidance when the Bone Cancer Research Trust was being created.

The trust first awarded research grants in 2006. Today, it aims to fund research into all forms of primary bone cancer, and to offer information and support to patients of any age.

It is currently seeking a person  with experience of primary bone cancer to join its newly-launched patient and public involvement panel.
