Deadline looms for physios to apply to be named Scotland's allied health professional of the year
Stand-out physiotherapists and otjer allied health professionals (AHPs) have less than two weeks to submit a nomination in the AHP category of the 2023 Scottish Health Awards. The deadline for nominations is 13 August and the AHP category winner will be announced at a ceremony at the 02 Academy in Edinburgh on 2 November.
Last year’s winner in the category – one of 16 listed in the annual awards – was physiotherapist Mhairi Burke, an AHP team lead based at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The award recognises the contribution of an AHP who is providing excellent care and support for people in Scotland. It is sponsored by Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, which runs physiotherapy degree courses.
Physios and other AHPs working in NHS teams that deliver ‘excellent quality of care and service’ can also be nominated in the ‘Top Team’ category, and there other options to consider. The Daily Record runs the prestigious annual awards in partnership with NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government. Tickets for the awards ceremony cost £132 per person.

The awards' website describes AHPs as a ‘distinct group of practitioners who apply their expertise to assess, diagnose, treat, discharge and rehabilitate people of all ages across health, education, housing, social care, voluntary and independent sectors’.
As well as physiotherapists, art therapists, drama therapists, music therapists, podiatrists, dietitians, occupational therapists, prosthetists and orthotists, paramedics, orthoptists, diagnostic radiographers, therapeutic radiographers, and speech and language therapists, can apply in the AHP category.
