The starting flag for this year’s Chief Allied Health Professions Officer (CAHPO) Awards was displayed yesterday (9 May) by Suzanne Rastrick, the chief AHP officer for England.

The announcement means that physiotherapists and other AHPs practising in the ‘AHP community' have one month to nominate themselves or others for delivering ‘exceptional care’. Nominations must be submitted by 9 June, with the submissions being reviewed and scored by judges the following month. People will learn about the outcome of their submissions by the end of August and the winners will be announced at an event on the evening of 12 October.

The awards also promote adoption and dissemination of good practice being delivered by nominated AHPs and give teams the chance to review their work and look at the impact they have made to services

As well as registered professionals, support workers, assistant practitioners, pre-registration apprentices and students can nominate themselves or their peers. The annual awards recognise the personal contribution people have made in delivering exceptional care for patients.

‘We continue to be impressed and inspired by AHPs in practice for their dedication, innovation and leadership,’ a statement available on NHS England’s website notes.

‘The awards also promote adoption and dissemination of good practice being delivered by nominated AHPs and give teams the chance to review their work and look at the impact they have made to services.’

As the third largest clinical workforce in the NHS, AHPs have an opportunity to demonstrate the ‘vital role they play in delivering the ambitions set out in the NHS Long Term Plan’, which was published in 2019.

The annual awards operate in partnership with Council of Deans of Health, Council for AHP Research, Greener NHS, NHS Race and Health Observatory, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities. This year, for the first time, a new sponsor has been announced: the Chief Nursing Information Officer.
