This book is a comprehensive summary of the recommendations for best practice, and current evidence, for physical activity and rehabilitation of functional deficits in individuals with end-stage/ life-limiting illness.

The authors provide extensive evidence on the positive impact that tailored physical activity and rehabilitation interventions can have on those living with life-limiting illness, thus improving their quality of life. It highlights the crucial role that health care professionals play in supporting the delivery of these interventions.

The opening paragraph states: ‘While advances in technology have afforded us the opportunity to live longer lives, it has also demanded an expansion of focus of medical interventions towards palliative care to enhance the quality within the duration.’

I would recommend Physical activity and rehabilitation in life-threatening illness to health professionals who are committed to delivering evidence-based interventions to their patients [Priya Dasoju]Offers 'key' reading materials

The book appears in Routledge's Research in Physical Activity and Health series to assist clinicians and fitness/exercise professionals in developing the critical skills they need to care for individuals experiencing life-limiting conditions and facing challenges at the end of life. It originated from Litterini and Wilson’s years of dedicated clinical and academic experience and was inspired by their professional collaborations through the American Physical Therapy Association’s Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy.

The book has four sections: the first covers strategies for developing essential skills in palliative care models for adults and children, including patient/family centred care, communication, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. The second part offers a comprehensive review of the most common life-threatening diagnoses and conditions; the third includes a discussion of symptom presentation, outcome measures and interventions in various practice settings.

In the book’s final section, the authors review topical issues in policy, research, and education, as well as discussing future directions in the field.

This book is key reading for academics and policy-makers working in physical activity, international exercise, wellness and rehabilitation, and related disciplines, as well as clinicians based in settings in which patients with advanced illness are frequently encountered, Litterini states.

I would recommend Physical activity and rehabilitation in life-threatening illness to health professionals who are committed to delivering evidence-based interventions to their patients.
